Global Health Observatory (GHO)

The Global Health Observatory database is the World Health Organization's main health statistics repository. It provides data and analyses for key health themes, as well as direct access to the full database. The WHO Statistical Information System (WHOSIS) has been upgraded and incorporated into the latest version (February 2011) of the GHO, to provide more data, more tools, more analysis and more reports.

Update of the CNTS Data Archive

In the new release (May 2010) of the CNTS Data Archive from Databanks International a significant amount of new data, including all of the Domestic Conflict Event variables through 2009 are now included. CNTS now has 202 variables and 194 years of data from 1815 through 2009.

World Bank Frees up Data

In April 2010 the World Bank Group opened up the World Development Indicators database (and several other databases) and offered free access to more than 2,000 financial, business, health, economic and human development statistics that had mostly been available only to paying subscribers. The decision was part of a larger effort to increase access to information at the World Bank. And, for the first time, data was made available in languages other than English, with an initial 330 indicators translated into French, Spanish and Arabic.

New access point for European election data

In February 2010 the European Election Database (EED), was released. It replaced the old CivicActive database. The European Election Database publishes election results on national and regional level; most of the regional level data are in accordance with the Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS), level 1 to 3. The database currently holds data for 31 European countries and covers results from 1990 to present.

MacroDataGuide update September 2009

In September 2009, reviews of four new sources of macro data were added to the MacroDataGuide. The new reviews added to the guide are of the African Election Database, Democracy Time-series Data, HDR - Human Development Reports and IDEA - Voter Turnout Database. In addition, all the existing reviews in the MacroDataGuide have been comprehensively revised and updated.

MacroDataGuide update June 2009

In June 2009, reviews of four new sources of macro data were added to the MacroDataGuide. The new sources added to the guide are Armed Conflict Dataset (UCDP/PRIO), Correlates of War, European Protest and Coercion Data and The Global Competitiveness Index.

New access point for UN statistics

In February 2008, a new and very significant source of macro data was launched. UNdata replaced the old UN Common Database in order to fuse access to data stemming from the various UN organs and organizations. UNdata disseminates data from 17 databases, which users can organize into tables and download. The contents of the portal will be further expanded with both international and national databases and thus aspires to become a single entry point to great amounts of statistical information.

European Social Survey: Contextual data

This 2008 report formed the origins of this website. It examines the availability and comparability of extant sources of contextual statistics of particular interest to users of ESS data. This website seeks to broaden the scope and be a valuable resource for social science data users worldwide (PDF).
