DPS - Democratic Party of Socialists of Montenegro - (Demokratska Partija Socijalista Crne Gore)

DPS is the successor of the Yugoslav Communist League's Montenegrin branch. It was renamed in 1991. It's leader, Milo Đukanović, who had been serving as prime minister at the time of independence, stepped down in November 2006 but returned to the post in February 2008. He then led the party, as part of the Coalition for a European Montenegro, to victory in the parliamentary elections of March 2009.

SNP - Socialist People's Party of Montenegro - (Socijalistička narodna partija Crne Gore)

SNP is a socialist opposition party in Montenegro. Currently the largest opposition party, it is strictly pro-European Union and aims at deposing the ruling DPS-SDP coalition as its main goal. The party is a de facto party of Serbs of Montenegro.

NSD/NOVA - New Serb Democracy - (Nova srpska demokratija)

Founded in 2009 by merger of Serb People’s Party with People’s Socialist Party and other small groups.

PzP - Movement for Changes - (Pokret za Promjene)

Founded in 2002 as non-governmental organization. Became political party in 2006. Supports European integration.

NDS/FORCA - New Democratic Power – FORCA - (Nova DemokratskaSnaga/Forca e Re Demokratike)

Founded in 2005. Principally ethnic Albanian party.

DUA/UDSH - Democratic Union of Albanians - (Demokratska Unija Albanaca/Unioni Demokratik i Shqiptarëve)

Albanian minority party.

DS/LD - Democratic League/Alliance in Montenegro - (Demokratski Savez u Crnoj Gori/Lidhja Demokratike në Mal të Zi)

Founded in 1990. Ethnic Albanian party.

AK-P/KS-P - Albanian Coalition—Perspective - (Albanska Koalicija—Perspektiva/Koalicioni Shqiptar – Perspektiva)

Ethnic Albanian party.
