Italy

Administrative Division

Italy is situated in the south of Europe. It borders on France in the northwest, the Ligurian Sea and the Tyrrhenian Sea in the west, the Ionian Sea in the south, the Adriatic Sea in the east, Slovenia in the northeast, and Austria and Switzerland in the north. The country includes the large Mediterranean islands of Sicily and Sardinia and several small islands, notably Elba, Capri, Ischia, and the Lipari Islands. Vatican City and San Marino are two independent enclaves on the Italian mainland.

For administrative purposes Italy is divided into regions (Regioni), provinces (Provincie) and municipalities (Comuni) . All three levels have elected councils, own competences and financial resources.

NUTS structure

The 20 regions correspond to the NUTS 2 units with the exception of Trento, which constitutes two NUTS 2 regions (Provincia Autonoma Bolzano/ Bozen and Provincia Autonoma Trento). Italy has 5 NUTS 1 units, 21 NUTS 2 units and 103 NUTS 3 units.
