The Norwegian Election Research Program was started in the middle of the 1950ties, at the Institutet for Social Research in Oslo, with Henry Valen and Stein Rokkan as principal investigators. Survey data for 1957, 1965, 1969 and 1973 was collected by the Norwegian Gallup Institute. The program has from 1977 cooperated with Statistics Norway on the practical data-collection in connection with Storting elections. The study in 1997 was the sixth in this series, and the tenth overall. The Election Studies are intended to supply statistical data for research on elections and political processes in Norway. Prof.Henry Valen was from the beginning the central coordinator for the studies, Prof. Bernt Aardal took over the role as central coordinating leader form 1985.
